Making your own edibles from scratch is simple enough once you get the hang of measuring out the ingredients, and working out how much cannabis extract you require for a batch of several types of iconic foods.
However, the process is a little different when you are using store-bought candies to create your own edibles. These products have already been manufactured, therefore it may seem a little more difficult to add an entire ounce of cannabis extract directly into them.
Don’t worry! This process is actually very simple and doesn’t take much time at all.
You will find that this method can be used with any candy product, to make whatever type of edible you desire. All you need are some gummy candies, some cannabis extract, and a couple of utensils to mix everything together.
This guide will help you through the process of making these delicious cannabis gummies at home.
So, let’s get into it!
- Gummy candy (e.g., gummy bears)
- Cannabis extract/oil
- Fruit juice (optional)
- 2 microwave-safe bowls
- A spatula
- A spoon
- Shaped molds (optional)
Melt The Gummies
The first step is to melt the gummies so that they can be infused with cannabis oil.
To do this, place a couple of gummies into the microwave-safe bowl – we recommend doing this in small batches, as it may take several minutes for the gummies to become soft enough to handle. The number of gummies used also depends on how much infused candy you want to make.
Add some liquid into the bowl with the gummies: this allows the gummies to become a thinner consistency, rather than becoming a gooey, thick mass. You can use water if you like, or if you would prefer to add fruit flavor, use the fruit juice of your choice.
Add just enough of your chosen liquid to submerge the gummies. Once they have been covered, it is time to heat them up.
Heat the gummies for 30 seconds before removing them. Check that they are melting evenly by stirring them in the bowl. If they have not completely melted, place them in the microwave and heat for another 10 seconds.
After this time, remove it from the microwave and stir again.
Repeat this process of heating for 10-second intervals until all the gummies have melted to a gooey consistency.
Liquidize Your Cannabis Extract
Once your gummies have completely melted, it is time to melt your cannabis extract.
You will want to combine the gummies and cannabis extract to create a silky texture, which can only be achieved if the extract is completely smooth. You don’t want the mixture to be clumpy and lumpy.
If you are using thinner cannabis oil, it will already be in a liquid form, so you will only need to heat it for 10 seconds or so. Heating the oil will encourage the THC to activate.
If the cannabis extract is quite thick, you will need to heat it in the microwave for 30 seconds. Remove after this time, and stir with your spoon.
Combine The Gummy Bears And Cannabis Extract
Once both ingredients have been heated, and are of a smooth texture, they can be combined.
Take one of your microwaved bowls and pour half of the contents of the other bowl into it. This should leave about 1/4 cup of space in each bowl – however, if you want more or less than this, simply adjust the quantity accordingly.
Stir the contents together until they have completely mixed, ensuring that there are no large lumps remaining. If you have not stirred properly, the gummy mixture will not absorb the cannabis, and will not have an effect while consumed.
Pour Into A Mold Of Your Choice
We recommend that you pour your cannabis-infused gummy mixture into a shaped mold in order to create individually shaped candies, but this is completely optional.
If you prefer, you could simply pour the whole mixture into a storage container, and slice the gummies into individual pieces once they have cooled.
However, the gummies will look so much cooler if they have been molded into different shapes.
Whichever container you decide to use, pour the gummy mixture into it, using the spatula to remove all traces of the mixture from the microwave-safe bowl. Silicone molds are best to use as they will make it easier to remove the gummies once they have been set.
Let Them Set
Your gummies will need to be left to cool for, at least, an hour. We recommend that you place the container/molds in the refrigerator during this time, as this will ensure that they harden a lot faster.
The gummies will need to completely cool and harden before you attempt to remove them from their molds. Otherwise, they will remain a gooey texture. They can be eaten in this state, but they will not taste as nice/taste the way that you would like them to.
For best results, in order to ensure that they have completely hardened, we recommend you leave the gummies to cool in the refrigerator overnight.
Once the gummies are firm to touch, you may remove them from their molds.
Enjoy Your Gummies!
Your candy is now ready to consume!
Depending on how much extract or oil you used, you may want to only eat a handful of gummies at a time. Otherwise, you may find yourself consuming too many and becoming nauseous.
The effects of eating multiple gummies are unpredictable. Different amounts of THC or CBD will affect the user differently, and no two people have the same tolerance. It is better to start out small and then gradually increase your dosage over time.
If you would like to give your gummies a sweeter taste, try coating them in sugar first. This makes the flavor last longer and provides a deeper, richer experience when the gummies are finally eaten.
You could even try mixing some raw honey or sugar into the original product. Simply mix these types of sweeteners (if applicable) with the rest of the ingredients when heating the gummies. You will need to experiment with this process to find what works well for you.
So, there we have it! That is how you can make your own infused store-bought gummies at home.
As previously mentioned, you can adapt this method to include many other forms of store-bought food or drinks that you enjoy having infused with cannabis, especially if they are jelly based.
